Taking Postpartum Back

We spend good time, money and resources on labor, birth and the few hours that follow but often we neglect that the days, weeks, and months when we are home with this new human can be amazing AND challenging. This is the postpartum period. I urge you to take control of your postpartum period so that you look back fondly.

Here is a list to consider while you are still pregnant to take an active role in your new postpartum life:

See your OB/GYN before 6 weeks if you want to.

If you have a history or of depression and anxiety have a therapist lined up.

Take a breastfeeding class.

Take 2 breastfeeding classes.

Have an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) contact ready in case you get into breastfeeding trouble.

Learn about normal newborn sleep patterns.

Learn about the size of your newborn stomach.

Research skin to skin.

Have a support system in place that supports your type of parenting.

Have your friends and family bring you meals.

Prepare frozen meals ahead of time.

Line up a house cleaner if that is something you desire.

Call your pediatrician as many times as you see fit.

Remember that you are the doctor's customers. If you are not happy with their service then make a change.

Put the advice nurse on speed dial. If you don't like what they have to say demand an appointment.

Be prepared for very little sleep.

It is a rarity that a baby will be a good sleeper from birth. If they are, it is likely to change as the reach different milestones.

Be prepared to hold, carry or wear your baby for most of the time in the days, weeks and months after it is born.

Research baby carriers and proper carries.

Hang out in a Mom Group... even if you don't want talk to anyone.

Do not be afraid or too proud to ask for help.

If you are having multiples line up extra help.

If you are having one baby line up extra help. You will need to shower, eat, take breathers, and steal some naps.

Let's start owning postpartum. Don't wait for someone to tell you how to do it. Do your research, take your classes and have a resource list available at your fingertips. This will allow you to sit back and take in all this period has to offer.
