Self-Care for Moms
If someone mentioned 'self-care' to me in the weeks after having my babies I might have laughed... and then cried. It can often feel overwhelmingly difficult to make space and time for yourself when you have a newborn and even an infant.
In my role as a Postpartum Doula I allow time and space for moms to do just that and they don't have to worry about the care of their baby because they are in the care of a professional. Refilling your cup after filling your new babe's all day {and night} is incredibly vital for your mental, emotional and physical revitalization during the postpartum period. I have also learned many other tricks for getting your self-care fix so you don't feel guilty and you can return refreshed!
Read on:
Go for a walk alone. {Fresh air, exercise and uninterupted thoughts can do wonders!}
Have someone take your baby for a walk. {It is rare that moms get to spend solitary time in their own homes after having children.}
Take a bath alone.
Meet your girlfriend at the closest coffee shop to your house for an hour tea break.
Go for the expensive pedicure.
Read for pleasure. {Put aside those baby books and let your mind drift off for a bit.}
Cook your favorite meal. Then, make a beautiful place setting to eat it!
Escape to the bedroom alone. {Whether you nap or sprawl out on the bed is up to you!}
Happy hour date. {Join your partner for small plates or a cocktail at the end of a long day.}
Water your plants and garden.
Take a solo drive and turn up your favorite song. You can also pick up some of your favorite take out for dinner.
Meditate {AKA Sit silently and empty your brain... sounds good doesn't it?}
Breathe {A mommy timeout to take some deep breaths can make the difference between a good and bad day.}
Many of these self care tips take the work of a caring team. Take the time to create this team while you are pregnant. Call on family, friends, the college student down the street, or your friendly, local Postpartum Doula!
